SSL changes happening on the 3rd of October 2017

On the 3rd of October 2017 we will be replacing the current SSL certificate used by our SMTP server hostname '' with a new certificate.

These changes have now been rolled out as planned, if you are experiencing any issues please contact us for assistance.

What are SSL certificates?

SSL certificates are used to encrypt connections between different applications, they are most commonly used on secure websites such as banks or payment providers, when you see the padlock in the address bar it confirms that the connection is safely encrypted using a trusted SSL certificate.

An SSL certificate can also be used when sending or receiving email so that you know it is a trusted connection and that your email is encrypted as it is transported across the Internet.

What is changing?

There are several different types of SSL certificates and until recently these were mostly SHA-1 type certificates, that type has now been discontinued as they are no longer secure, they have been replaced by a newer secure version called SHA-2.

Our current SHA-1 certificate expires soon so it has to be replaced with a new SHA-2 certificate.

If your email program / operating system doesn't support SHA-2 certificates you won't be able to send email.

Who will this affect?

The change will only affect much older operating systems that do not have support built-in for SHA-2 SSL certificates.

The following operating systems do not support SHA-2 SSL certificates:

  • Windows XP (without service pack 3)
  • Windows Server 2003 (without service pack 2)

...and there are likely to be other older operating systems and devices that have the same issue.

What should I do?

If you have an up-to-date operating system / device you don't need to do anything.

If you connect to our service from one of the operating systems listed above we would strongly recommend that you apply the service pack updates that add support for SHA-2 SSL certificates.

If you are unsure please login to the control panel and raise a support ticket, ensure that you include the operating system / device name and version that you are using and we will do our best to advise.

What should I do if I can't update / replace?

In that case you will need to disable SSL in your email program or device, to do this please untick / disable any SSL settings in the configuration and set the SMTP port to '325'
